When We Are Longing To Be Liked

I had to take a couple weeks off social media.

My perspective was getting skewed. It’s like social media has become this entity and I was judging my cool factor or self-worth in how many likes or comments I had. (maybe not to that extreme but you get my point.)

Can anyone relate? Please tell me I’m not alone.

I am a bona fide, sanguine that loves to be liked. (yes it can cross over into narcissism, don’t judge, I’m dealing with it okay?)

So, when I see those red notifications pop up, especially if the number is high, I’m elated. But, when I don’t get many likes or comments, I start questioning myself.

It’s madness really. Sick really…

We base so much of our identity on numbers anymore, and not just from the number of our followers or re-tweets.

The numbers on the scale.

The numbers on a paycheck.

The numbers in our savings account.

When I went to She Speaks a few weeks ago, this perception of mine was really getting jaded when we learned about building a platform and it was all about your numbers on social media.

Now don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t their fault, they’re suppose to teach this stuff, but I couldn’t help but feel like a big fat zero, because I am far from having a platform. I thought it was something in which you stand on..

Talk about anxiety.

So, Jesus and I have been talking. And as I read “do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind”, (Romans 12:2) I realize we believers at times get sucked in with the crazy tide of the world regarding numbers and popularity.

And when that happens, we need some serious mind renewal.

If we want to count numbers or look at real facts on how much we are liked here’s a few:

The God of the universe knows the exact number of hairs on our heads. Luke 12:7 (Which means He’s crazy about us btw).

Or, we couldn’t count the number of times He thinks about us in a day. Scripture says it would outnumber the grains of sand. (Psalm 139:17-18)

How’s that for notifications?

Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders which You have done, and your thoughts toward us; there is none to compare with you. If I would declare and speak of them, they would be too numerous to count. Psalm 40:5

So Friends–How about we stop obsessing over red notifications to see how much we’re liked and instead peer into a red love letter to see how much we’re loved.

Red love letter quote

If we are going to count something or measure ourselves up against something, may it be the blood stains He left for us on that cross.

And that my friend is worth more than all the likes in the world.
